Playing amplified
Apr 2, 2010

I've had the occasion to try out a couple of amps. I can recommend you some of them.

I've got myself a Schertler David, which I like for its fidelity and clear definition. The Unico from Schertler, bigger and more powerful, is even better, its sound is a bit rounder.

On the Schertler, I take the "Stat" entry, but with stat and phantom powering turned off. The basses turned up 3/4, the middles 1/2 and the treble 1/4, and you hear exactly the sound of your Neolin coming out of the amp. You have to hear it to believe it !

To restitute the natural vibration of the resonance body, I add a little bit (1/5) of sustain. With this setting, you can turn up to 75 %  and play in front of your amp without any feedback.

I also like the American brand "Carvin". The sound is a bit less precise, but warmer than the Schertler. The amp I tried had no difficulties amplifying a 5 string Neolin with a double-octave pedal. The Schertler is not capable of doing that ! The "Carvin I tried" had 3 entries with quite different sounds, and a bunch of very nice effects already installed. I used the 2nd entry, basses 2/3, treble 1/3.

An amp which simply blew me away was a bass amp from PB (don't remeber the type) :-(  ). Absolute fidelity and a sound which filled up the entire space, with two speakers turned towards the front and two towards the ceiling. This might be my favorite. Same setting as above - raise the basses, lower the treble.

What I do NOT recommend are electric guitar amps. The sound is completely unnatural. But as they are pretty lofi, this might be a good solution if you want to play with massive distorion and saturation.

A popular amp I do not like  for the Neolin is the AER. You have to completely turn down the treble, otherwise it's aggressif. But then, the sound becomes flat.
